Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks (1913-2005) was an American activist in the civil rights movement best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott. The United States Congress has honoured her as "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement". On 1 December 1955, Rosa Parks refused to vacate a row of four seats in the "coloured' section in favour of a White passenger. Her actions inspired the Black community to boycott the Montgomery buses for over a year and resulted in a lawsuit that decided that bus segregation was unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. Rosa Parks became an international icon of resistance to racial segregation. We have lots of resources on Rosa Parks for you to use and to inspire further research.
